The October 2018 Meeting of the Historic West Side Neighborhood Association is on Thursday, October 25th, at 7:00 p.m. at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church in the round room.
Derek Hensley from State Farm insurance on West Jefferson (his office is in our area) will be our speaker. He’ll give a short presentation on homeowner’s insurance coverage and in particular, coverage for burglaries.
National Night Out began in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals to let them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. This program culminates annually on the first Tuesday of August. This activity involves millions of people in all fifty states. Come out to Historic Westside Neighborhood Associations 2017 National Night Out!!!
When: Tuesday, August 1, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Where: Westminster Presbyterian Church, Corner of Edwards and Walnut
We’ll have Head West sub sandwiches, ice cream treats, and beverages will be provided.
Also, the K-9 team is going to be able to join us for a demo on the parking lot after 7 p.m.
State’s Attorney John Milhiser will give a brief presentation and answer questions regarding property crimes and crimes to persons, safety precautions to take and best use of information to assist law enforcement for potential prosecution of crimes.
Feel free to bring family, friends and other neighbors.

Speakers Public Works Director Mark Mahoney will be our speaker. He will provide an update of the status of the intersections of MacArthur and Lawrence and Walnut and Lawrence.
Our neighborhood police officer Matt Goulet will also be at the meeting and available to answer questions.
The Wooden It Be Lovely ministry of DAUMC is having a sale of re-purposed wooden furniture on Saturday, March 25, 2017, beginning at 9:00 a.m. In the past, they have had some incredibly cute pieces that would make a wonderful addition to someone’s home. Another ministry at DAUMC is their community garden, located directly south of the church’s parking lot. There will be an informational meeting on Wednesday, March 29th at 6:30 at the church. This year, they hope to allow individual families to come and plant what they choose and have a “box” (raised bed) garden of their own. There will also be a gardening night each week for people to help out and garden together.
The quarterly meeting for HWSNA will be held this Thursday, January 26, 2017, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church (corner of Douglas and Governor). We will be meeting in the Round Room on the lower level of the church. Guest speakers will be Kristin DiCenso and Martin Fruchtl, the candidates for the aldermanic position for Ward 6 (to replace Cory Jobe). If their schedules allow, our NPO Matt Goulet and Brian Harhausen will also be at the meeting and available to answer questions. Please join us for this informative meeting.
Reminder: National Night Out for HWSNA being hosted at Westminster Presbyterian church, corner of Edwards and Walnut, tomorrow evening, Tuesday, 8-2-16 from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Entrance and parking on north side of church.

Thank you to all of our residents who have dropped off aluminum cans for recycling to our treasurer Sharon Riffey at 1407 Mossman. Please feel free also to attend the May 12th meeting and bring any aluminum cans to that gathering.
At the end of 2015, the terms for our NPO Jennifer Howard and Jonathan Wingerter ended. We very much appreciate their involvement with our neighborhood and thank them for their service. We welcome our new NPO’s Daniel Weiss and Matt Goulet. The previous numbers have been transferred to our new NPO’s and can be found in another section of our website.
Congratulations also to several HWSNA area businesses who were voted “Best” in Springfield recently: Best Pet Groomer, Suds and Pups, at 235 N. English and Best Barber – Craig Jones at Jones’ Chop Shop, 1022 West Lawrence. Congrats also to runner up in the Best Thrift Store category to Vintage Pop at 1135 West Governor.
